The Book of the Miracles of the Blessed Andrew the Apostle (Liber de miraculis beati Andreae apostoli), long regarded as a sixth-century reworking of an earlier apocryphal work by an anonymous author, has often been ignored or used by scholars as a vehicle for recovering that now mostly lost work, The Acts of Andrew. Yet in recent years there has emerged a growing consensus that The Book of the Miracles of the Blessed Andrew the Apostle (hereafter noted as the MA) was authored by Gregory of Tours (538–594), the preeminent historical source for the sixth-century West. While Gregory and his hagiographical works have been studied with increasing vigor by scholars, the MA has only recently figured into that effort and, consequently, has not yet been fully translated into English. This volume attempts to fill this void by offering the first full English translation of the MA, alongside Max Bonnet’s Latin edition, and by setting the work in its rightful place in Gregory’s canon. With an introduction, glossary, notes, and a map of places mentioned in the text, this volume provides an accessible entry point to both the study of the legacy of the apostles as well as Gregory of Tours’s interpretation of it. The MA is valuable for the study of early Christianity, late antiquity, and religious culture in the Merovingian Kingdom of the Franks.

In Imitations of Infinity, Michael A. Motia places Gregory of Nyssa at the center of a world filled with Platonic philosophers, rhetorical teachers, and early Christian leaders all competing over what and how to imitate. Their debates demanded the attentions of people at every level of the Roman Empire.

Quotations in early Christian writers provide important evidence for the text of the New Testament as well as the ways in which Scripture was used and received in the early Church. The fourth-century archbishop Gregory of Nazianzus was one of the most influential and widely-read authors of his time, but because the majority of his output was in poetic form he has rarely been treated as a source for the biblical text. The present study brings together all the identifiable references to the Gospels in Gregory's writings for the first time, comparing them with standard biblical texts and manuscripts in order to determine their significance for the history and transmission of the New Testament. This collection also sheds new light on Gregory's treatment of Scripture and the distinctive role it plays in his rhetorical style.

This book profiles the modernist Californian architect Gregory Ain (1908-1988)-specifically his housing projects-through a selection of essays by historians and critics, and by imagery both archival and contemporary -- The Southern California architect Gregory Ain (1908–1988) collaborated with some of the most important figures of midcentury design, including Rudolph Schindler, Richard Neutra, and Charles and Ray Eames, and yet remains relatively unknown. Perhaps one reason for this anonymity is that although he designed private homes for wealthy liberals, Ain was more interested in finding ways to produce high-quality, low-cost houses in well-designed neighborhood settings for working-class families. This is the first book to examine the innovative housing projects that synthesized Ain's architectural and political ideals.

Gregory's festal orations are foundational for Byzantine literature. This book shows how besides his priestly role, Gregory plays that of a rhetor performing philosophy for a festival audience, channeling traditions of Classical philosophy and the Second Sophistic into Christian culture. Before serving as Bishop of Constantinople and becoming known to posterity as "the Theologian", Gregory of Nazianzus was an Athens-trained professional teacher of Greek literature. Steeped in the rhetorical culture of the Second Sophistic, his orations for Christian feasts such as Christmas and Pentecost belong to a Classical tradition that privileged the performance of philosophy at festivals. Widely copied and translated, they were instrumental in Gregory becoming one of the most popular and influential authors in Byzantium. This book shows how his orations represent a crucial point in the Late Antique reception of Platonism, rhetorical theory, and ancient festival culture.

Beyond the Voting Rights Act movingly recounts over 30 years of contemporary voting rights battles in the United States from the 1980s to the present day. The book places in context the modern-day battles against voter suppression laws that were embedded in American history and are still underway across the country. It tells a story of that struggle from the author’s perspective beginning as a young African American from Cleveland in the 1980s, who reluctantly became involved within this movement as a student activist and inadvertently rose to become an integral part of the ultimate legislative victory

Gregory of Tours, the sixth-century Merovingian bishop, composed extensive historiographical and hagiographical corpora during the twenty years of his episcopacy in Tours. These works serve as important sources for the cultural, social, political and religious history of Merovingian Gaul. This book focuses on Gregory's hagiographical collections, especially the Glory of the Martyrs, Glory of the Confessors, and Life of the Fathers, which contain accounts of saints and their miracles from across the Mediterranean world. It analyses these accounts from literary and historical perspectives, examining them through the lens of relations between the Merovingians and their Mediterranean counterparts, and contextualizing them within the identity crisis that followed the disintegration of the Roman world. This approach leads to groundbreaking conclusions about Gregory's hagiographies, which this study argues were designed as an 'ecclesiastical history' (of the Merovingian Church) that enabled him to craft a specific Gallo-Christian identity for his audience.
